Mitsubishi Mentor Day
On October 23,,2015 Mitsubishi Electric Automation Inc. (MEAU) in Vernon Hills, IL opened its door to students of the NSSED catchment area by offering a Mentor Day. Each participating student was paired with a MEAU employee to experience what it's like to work in a state-of-the-art company. Students experienced working in positions such as administration, logistics, assembly and technical development.
The event began with a tour of the facility and ended with a luncheon hosted by MEAU's Visions Committee. The Visions Committee is a member of the Mitsubishi’s Foundation - whose mission is all about empowering youth with disabilities to lead productive lives.
Students who are in transition programs in Districts 225, 115, 113 and the NSSED transition program participated in the event. Students were selected by their classroom teacher or transition counselor. To participate in the program, students had to apply for a position and be interviewed by Pam Palmersheim, Business Specialist for NSSED who provides business and interview skills training to students in transition and who was instrumental in making this opportunity available to district students.
In addition to the Mentoring Day, this year Mitsubishi granted North Shore Academy funding to purchase six touchscreen chrome OS laptop/tablets. Last year Mitsubishi funded the purchase of six iPads for NSSED Educational and Life Skills classrooms.
This partnership between NSSED and MEAU began in early 2014. We look forward to additional Mentoring Days for our students in the future.
