Parent Academy is educational programming created by the NSSED Association of Parents and Staff in collaboration with it's member school districts parent leadership groups.The Academy's purpose is to provide parents professional learning that empowers them to be active, collaborative, and engaged members of their child’s educational team and school community. These workshops are free and open to the community.
Parent Academy Learning Cohorts cover a comprehensive study of a specific area of the educational, parent or disability field. Series are scheduled over the course of several months. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions within a series as materials and knowledge build from one session to the next. Also, there are multiple topics covered in the Learning Cohort, however we encourage you to look at the Sequenced Learning schedule for deeper insight into some of the topics covered in the Cohort.

Case Management
Parents become the primary case manager for their child after school years, and have a significant impact on whether the vision for their child becomes a reality. This session will be facilitated by Susan Hans, NSSED Parent Mentor

Susan Hans is the Parent Mentor for the Northern Suburban Special Education District. She has held this position for the past 12 years, during which she has conducted workshops for a broad spectrum of parent, teacher, staff and administrative groups on collaborative problem solving and effective communication strategies in the IEP process, and supporting young adults after they transition from school. She also frequently presents on parent leadership in education and provides consultative services to both parents and staff. Mrs. Hans is the parent of four children, one still in the school system with an IEP. Prior to joining the educational field, Mrs. Hans worked as executive and consultant in the healthcare industry. She received her BA in Economics from Northwestern University.
