Presenters: Dr. Pamela Williamson has published numerous peer-reviewed articles related to reading and autism in journals such as Exceptional Children, The Journal of Special Education, Focus on Autism, and Teaching Exceptional Children. She is the coeditor of an award winning textbook, Quality Literacy Instruction for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.  She has expertise in qualitative research methodologies having coauthored papers using critical incident technique, grounded theory, discourse analysis, narrative analysis, and domain analysis.  She currently serves as the Director of Graduate Studies and the Doctoral Program Coordinator for the SES Department.  She elected to the board of Teacher Education Division of CEC.

Dr. Christina R. Carnahan is an author, teacher and is currently serving as the Assistant Professor of Special Education at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Carnahan recently earned her Ed.D. from the University of Cincinnati in education with a focus on autism, improving outcomes for individuals with significant disabilities, and teacher training. While receiving her degree, she served as a consultant for school districts seeking to improve services for children with autism and significant learning needs. Prior to starting her doctorate, Dr. Carnahan was a special education teacher in both elementary and middle school. She has also published and given a number of talks in the areas of classroom and instructional design for students with intense disabilities, supporting classroom staff, and promoting positive behavior for students with disabilities. Her research interests include improving learning and life outcomes for students with autism and significant learning needs by increasing teacher efficiency and effectiveness.

Activity Description: The purpose of this workshop is to help teams plan and deliver effective, efficient communication and literacy instruction for individuals with autism. Teams will participate in two days of interactive instruction that will be followed up with virtual coaching support from Dr. Pamela Williamson and Dr. Christina R. Carnahan.

PD Credit Hours: 6.0 per session
Registration: 8:00 am to 8:30 am
Session: 8:30 am to 3:30 pm; Lunch: (One hour - on your own.)

Any person with with a licence through Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) is required to enter their Illinois Educator Identification Number (IEIN) when registering for this class. You can find your number by logging into the Educator Licensure Information System (ELIS)
