The Association of Parents and Staff (APS) is an organization of parents who have children with special needs in any of NSSED's 18 member school districts, and the staff who serve them. Our mission is to make a difference in the lives of our children with disabilities through advocacy, partnership and support. Together with our staff partners, we hope to heighten awareness and understanding of learning differences, provide ongoing training and education, and offer support and connections to all.
Sue Hans, NSSED Parent Mentor
Getting into the IEP This session is intended for all parents – whether your child has just received their IEP or it has had one in place for years. With years of both personal and professional experience, Susan will cover the basic components of the IEP process and plan, provide specific strategies on how to make the meeting more meaningful to you as a parent, and how you can effectively contribute to the process and outcomes.
Susan Hans is the Parent Mentor for the Northern Suburban Special Education District. She has held this position for the past 12 years, during which she has conducted workshops for a broad spectrum of parent, teacher, staff and administrative groups on collaborative problem solving and effective communication strategies in the IEP process, and supporting young adults after they transition from school. She also frequently presents on parent leadership in education and provides consultative services to both parents and staff. Mrs. Hans is the parent of four children, one still in the school system with an IEP. Prior to joining the educational field, Mrs. Hans worked as executive and consultant in the healthcare industry. She received her BA in Economics from Northwestern University.
