Road Trip! 21st Century Style
The Glen Grove ELS class, led by teacher Marcy Frantz, has been taking a virtual road trip through historic Route 66 this school year during the "Circle of Friends" class period! The Circle of Friends group is comprised of third, fourth and fifth grade Glen Grove students that applied for a spot to learn with the ELS students twice a week. The goals of this class are to express creativity, experience geography, and build new vocabulary and concepts through cooperative learning.
The first activity students participated in was to learn about Route 66 and decorated detailed cars, designed by Mr. John, Glen Grove ELS Teaching Assistant. Students then learned about road and directional signs and students created their own. Students then prepared to leave on their trip by packing their "suitcases" filled with their favorite snacks, books, music, toys, and clothes. Other activities have included visiting major attractions along the route such as the International Balloon Fiesta, designing bridges using minimal materials, painting post-cards in Georgia O'Keeffe's style, and drawing Native American Indian symbols on Navajo vases. This Circle of Friends learning experience has been filled with many educational and imaginative hands-on activities while exploring our great country.
