What steps have you taken? 2) What are some next steps that will help us support each other? (Resources\, Training\, etc?) 3) How do we communicate and educate our parents on the changes? SUMMARY:Developing and Sustaining Comprehensive School-Family-Community Partnership Programs
DESCRIPTION:Admin Partnership 3-9-12 Facilitated By: Susan Hans\, Parent Mentor and Coordinator of School\, Family\, and Community Partnerships Target Audience:This session has been developed for school and district administrators including superintendents\, special education directors\, ELL administrators\, building principals\, and assistant principals. Decription: There is no topic in education on which there is greater agreement than the need for parent involvement. Despite strong agreement on the importance of these goals\, most schools and districts still need help in developing comprehensive programs of school\, family and community partnerships. For over 20 years\, researchers at Johns Hopkins University have worked with educators\, parents\, students\, community partners\, and other researchers to learn how elementary\, middle\, and high schools develop and maintain excellent programs of partnership. In this session participants will learn about basic research and components of a comprehensive partnership program for student success. Programs and practices of partnership make a difference in achieving positive student outcomes and access resources to their greatest potential. Register by: Friday\, March 2\, 2012 CPDU/CEU’s 2.5 Session 9:30 a.m. -12:00 p.m. [divider style="thin"] → Online Registration → NSSED Home Page [divider style="thin"]

SUMMARY:University of Kansas: Listening and Notetaking Strategy and The Test Taking Strategy
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by: Susan Meyer Description: The Listening and Notetaking Strategy was developed as a part of the SIM Learning Strategies Curriculum at the University of Kansas-Center for Research on Learning. The purpose of this strategy is for the students to learn how to Identify essential/nonessential information during a lecture or teacher directed activity\, write quickly while listening to the lecture\, sort information into main ideas and details as the write\, study the information immediately as to prepare for assessments. The instruction will provide a system for taking notes and studying notes. It can be learned in a short period of time. It has been validated with high school students with and without disabilities. It can be embedded in a variety of classrooms at different tiers and content classes. Progress monitoring is a component of the instruction. The Test Taking Strategy provides an effective and efficient way to improve student performance on classroom tests. It has been designed to help students meet demands of testing situations. This strategy provides a system for students to allocate time and order of importance to each section of the test\, read and focus on important elements of the test\, utilize other Learning Strategies\, selecting an answer or abandoning questions\, making informed guesses\, using self-talk and the application of other test-wise principles. Formative practice tests are included in the instructional methodology. SUMMARY:University of Kansas: Paragraph Writing Grades 4-12 CANCELLED due to low Attendance
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated By: Susan M. Meyer CANCELLED due to low Attendance This strategy is an easy-to-use scaffold approach to help students improve paragraph writing. It includes prewriting ideas related to a topic\, plus panning the point of view\, verb tense\, and sequence of ideas. Students also learn how to write a variety of detail and clincher sentences as well as the types of paragraphs (narrative\, expository\, and compare/contrast). The Paragraph Writing Strategy is a researched–based instructional strategy that can be used as part of the core curriculum\, Tier 1\, or as a strategy implemented alone or with other written language interventions at Tiers 2 and 3. The strategy can be taught to students in grades 4-12 by general/special education teachers and support staff. *Previous training in the SIM Sentence Writing is recommended. SUMMARY:CLOSED: ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) February 6 & 7
DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored by NSSED & NSSEO Presented by Dr. Jennifer Endre Olson\, Psy.D.\, Olson Center for Young Children with Autism Target Audience: Multidisciplinary team members that may include speech-language pathologists and special education teachers The ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) is a semi-structured standardized observational method used for assessing communication\, reciprocal social interaction\, play and restricted or repetitive behaviors or interests in individuals of all ages who have been referred because of possible Autism or other Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). This measure used for decades in research has along with the ADI-R\, become a standard means of direct assessment for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders in research and clinical practice alike. Used with children as young as 12 months\, and through adulthood\, the ADOS is intended to create a social context through which observations can be made about the quality of engagement with the examiner\, patterns of communication\, and appropriateness of play\, as well as the presence of stereotypic\, repetitive\, or atypical behaviors and interests. Behaviors are coded\, interpreted and then compiled on an algorithm which yields classifications of Autism Spectrum or Non-Spectrum. The results are then used to support diagnosis\, identify behaviors for intervention\, monitor growth or progress\, and/or develop individualized educational goals. This training uses a combination of lecture\, live demonstration and large group scoring discussions. A networking group for all recently trained ADOS participants is planned as follow-up to this training. Please bring your calendars; one or both of the following dates will be selected: March 13\, April 10\, 2012.
